    Blocks
The technique of the block execution is not in the prevention of hit, but, on the contrary, in delay of performance of the block till the last moment so that the opponent could not stop the hit which has to be blocked. Blocks should be carried out basically by a forearm, vigorously, with force to hurt the opponent; therefore they are means of protection and an attack. Muscles during the moment of hit should be strained, and others, on the contrary, should be flexible to strike the hit, instead of to stop. In this case muscles do not strain, the forearm continues to move until the fist or a leg is not drawn aside. It is recommended to study strength blocks for the beginning. In due course, when necessary skills acquired, it is recommended to study soft blocks. Soft blocks are more difficult in execution. They do not oppose with a plane of an attacking hand/leg a protective plane of a hand/leg(strength blocks), but slightly change a attack movement direction. Soft blocks allow using force of the opponent at the organization of your attacks (main principle of aikido). Let's see the so-called upper block.
The upper block is executing in left - or right-hand stands. The blocking forearm corresponds to the leg which stays ahead. Movement of a hand occurs from a belt, covering the bottom part of a belly and completely a breast, rising upwards and having reached up to a forehead, the hand makes turn by lateral side to you. It allows increasing much the efficiency of blocking. Turn should be vigorous and sharp. Other hand moves to a hip, accepting position for hit. It should be clenched in a fist, near the hip side with fingers upwards. During the moment of the block which should be up of forehead, the hand is bent in an elbow; the forearm is located obliquely to a head. It is necessary to watch a forearm; during the movement it should be located so that all the body from a bottom of a belly up to a head was blocked. It is necessary to do blocking movement on an exhalation that allows increasing much the speed of its execution.
On this picture you can see a very strength blocking. The fist of not blocking hand moves not to back, but repeats the movement of a blocking hand, touching an elbow. The forearm of not blocking hand stops at a level of a solar plexus. The blocking hand makes movement from a bottom of a belly by a semicircle aside attacking opponent. Contact of a lateral surface of a hand happens with a hand/leg of attacking person.
In the given picture blocking by a knee is presented. This technique can be used to block a kick in front (striking the big shinbone) the attack by a head forward in area of a belly and also to protected yourself on the ground.
This blocking is carried out by two crossed hands and demands small effort, and, so, is rather easily executed. There are 2 variants of execution of the block they are a high and low level. High: expose 2 crossed hands at height of a forehead and slightly ahead. Hands are ready to seize a wrist of the opponent. Blocking is executed by two fists crossed in wrists with their sharp ejection upwards. Low: the fist, same to the leg exposed forward, should be always above at a crossing. You should not bend too much forward.
Let's execute the block for the left forearm. You have to bend the left hand above a shoulder so that clench a fist with fingers to the opponent at a level of an ear. The right hand is sometimes bent on a breast. Further it is necessary to wave a fist of the left hand sharply on a circular trajectory and make turn, having made movement by a fist in a direction of the hit downwards (which has to be blocked). The external edge of a forearm near to a wrist executes the block. Simultaneously right hand moves to extreme back position. These both movements should be urged forward by strong turn of edges. It is not recommended to do an excessive move forward by a blocking hand as the block may become weak. The angle formed by the blocking hand, should be 90 degrees.
This block applies to reflect the hits impacts by any leg. For execution of this block it is necessary to clench the left hand in an elbow until it will get into vertical position in front of the leg exposed forward, it means the left hand remains slightly bent at the moment of a contact. A turn of a wrist happens at the moment of a contact. At this time the right hand makes movement forward until the hand will not stop by edge of a palm at a level of a solar plexus.
This block applies for reflection of hits by a hand. The blocking hand corresponds to a leg which stays ahead. Let’s see this block in a sided stand. The clenched fist of the left hand begins movement from a bottom of a belly, pulling from the right shoulder. The right hand with a palm to the ground rises in a direction of the opponent. Further the right hand makes sharp movement aside a hip, its fist takes position for hit, and the left hand makes a semicircle in outside direction. Turn of a wrist should be executed before the moment of contact with a hand of the opponent so that the external side of a forearm was directed on the opponent, and the fist was turned upwards with fingers. It is necessary that the left hand during the moment of contact had strictly vertical position for efficiency of the block. The angle formed by it should not exceed 90 degrees.
